Goal: I can listen to and understand someone talking about buying things secondhand.

INTRODUCE

Buying secondhand goods is a great way to save money. Secondhand shops may also have one-of-a-kind items that you can’t find in regular stores!

STEP A EXPRESSIONS

Go over the expressions with your tutor and answer the questions.

    1. To spend money on something means to use money for something.

     

    I usually spend money on fancy coffee and tea.

     

    Q: What do you usually spend money on?

     

     

    2. If something is a waste of money, it means that it’s not good to spend money on it.

     

    I think the movie was a waste of money.

     

    Q: What do you think is a waste of money?

     

     

    3. To be broke means to have no money.

     

    I’ll be broke if I go drinking every night!

     

    Q: What should people do when they’re broke?

STEP B PRONUNCIATION

When one word ends in –nd and the next word starts with a consonant sound, the /d/ sound is often dropped.

TRIVIA

Secondhand shops are commonly known as recycle shops but the term recycle shop is actually a direct translation. In English, secondhand shops are also commonly called thrift shops.
