STEP B GRAMMAR TIP

Use have to and have got to to say that it is necessary to do something.

You can use have to in any situation.

  • have to take my sister to school.
  • He has to pick up his parents from the bus station.

You can use have got to in informal situations.

  • I’ve got to go grocery shopping.
  • She’s got to take care of her baby.

UNDERSTAND

LISTENING

It’s game day for Dan and Eric’s futsal club. A few hours before the game, Eric left Dan a voicemail.

TRIVIA

Many people overuse the word must. Both must and have to show that an action is necessary, but must is stronger and sounds unnatural in many everyday situations. Must is more common in formal writing (ex. signs about rules).

O I have to cook dinner every night.
