STEP B GRAMMAR TIP

Use what time to ask when something happens or will happen.

  • What time does the store open?
  • What time do you want to meet up?

To read time, simply read the numbers. You can read 0 as oh.

  • Let’s meet up at 10:45 (ten forty-five).
  • It’s 8:15 (eight-fifteen) right now.
  • The show starts at 9:05 (nine oh five).
  • It’s 6:01 (six oh one) right now.

You can add o’clock for times that end in :00.

  • The store opens at 9 o’clock.
  • It closes at 8 o’clock.

Use a.m. for morning and p.m. for afternoon/evening/night. Be careful not to use o’clock with a.m. or p.m.

  • The store opens at 9 a.m.
  • Let’s meet up at 9:30 p.m.

UNDERSTAND

READING

It’s Sunday morning. Saori and Masa are texting each other.

Saori: Hi, Masa. Sorry, I can’t meet up tonight. I have plans with Catherine.

Masa: Okay. Do you want to have dinner together after school tomorrow? There’s a new ramen restaurant near our school. It’s called Kame Ramen.

Saori: Kame Ramen? lol Sure. Can Catherine come with us?

Masa: No problem.

Saori: Great! What time should we meet her?

Masa: I think Kame Ramen opens at 6 p.m. Let’s meet her there at 7 o’clock.

Saori: All right. I’ll tell her that.

TRIVIA

Do you know lol? It’s the English version of 웃음. It means laughing out loud. Another common way to write 웃음 in English is rofl, which means rolling on the floor laughing.
